Can money buy happiness? It’s an age old question, one that will perhaps never have a single true answer, but that won’t stop anyone from putting in their two cents. Some think that money could solve their problems, or that money could buy them anything they want, which would ultimately lead to happiness. And some use their money for exactly that: To buy a large home, to buy an expensive car, or to buy luxury clothing and jewelry.
That large home comes with a mortgage, however, one that will be paid out over decades, even if the good times stop and the money doesn’t quite come in.
That expensive car is a depreciating asset, one that’s worth a fraction of its initial value just a few short years later, and one that comes with ongoing costs like repair and insurance.
Luxury clothing and jewelry can go out of fashion, or degrade with wear and tear, or simply lose their appeal over time.
One could argue that such things may still bring happiness, however temporary, but a more convincing argument may just be that happiness is more a matter of:
People over possessions.
Love over luxury.
Moments over monuments.
Contentment over conquering.
Peace over places.
And always giving thanks for what you have instead of striving for what you want. Something to think about the next time you find yourself wondering if money can buy happiness.
