Quotes about Family Dysfunction

Quotes about family problems aren't always pleasant, but they're usually memorable. Here is the Selfvibe review team’s collection of quotes which can help open the door to communication and healing.

Mitch Alborn: “All parents damage their children. It cannot be helped. Youth, like pristine glass, absorbs the prints of its handlers. Some parents smudge, others crack a few shatter childhoods into jagged little pieces, beyond repair.”

Milton R. Saperstein: “Bringing up a family should be an adventure, not an anxious discipline in which everybody is constantly graded for performance.”

Unknown: “We cannot destroy kindred: our chains stretch a little sometimes, but they never break.”

Arundhati Roy: “This was the trouble with families. Like invidious doctors, they know just where it hurt.”

Ugo Betti: “I think the family is the place where the most ridiculous and least respectable things in the world go on.”

Marian Wright Edelman: “If you as parents cut corners, your children will, too. If you lie, they will, too. If you spend all your money on yourselves and tithe no portion of it to charities, colleges, churches, synagogues, and civic causes, your children won't either. And, if parents snicker at racial and gender jokes, another generation will pass on the poison adults still have not had the courage to snuff out.”

Isaac Rosenfeld: “In every dispute between parent and child, both cannot be right, but they may be, and usually are, both wrong. It is this situation which gives family life its peculiar hysterical charm.”

Christopher Paolini: “Those whom we most love are often the most alien to us.”

People Change, So Do Friendships

Time passes, people change. The best of friends from our formative years tend to be less present in our lives as we get older, as they all split off, move to different places, and start families. While it’s not always the case, oftentimes childhood friends drift apart. It usually happens naturally, and here are three of the many reasons why that’s ok.

Distance is difficult. Not everyone spends their entire life where they grew up. The world, after all, is a big place, and opportunities can sometimes take us far from home. Great distances can often put a strain on even the closest of friendships, and when it does, it’s only natural for people to drift apart.

Interests change. We’re not all the same people we were back in school, so it’s only natural that we wouldn’t necessarily be interested in the same things we were back when we were in school. As our personalities developed so did our interests, and sometimes we find ourselves losing the common interests that made for our best friendships. It happens, and when it doesn’ it’s ok to move on.

Priorities change. When we’re young, we’re usually free of responsibilities. But adulthood brings about jobs, houses, and families, all of which become priorities in our lives, priorities that may leave far less time for those we once called friends. It doesn’t mean those friends don’t matter, but it’s ok to put other things first.

Inspiration Is Never Hard to Find

There’s no doubt about it, 2020 has been a tough year for everyone. And when you find that the year that has been may have sapped you of your inspiration, take comfort in the fact that inspiration is never hard to find, and here are a few ways you can inspire yourself.

Mindfulness meditation. It may sound like a hokey, new age thing, but it works. Mindfulness meditation is the practice of bringing your attention to the present moment. It may take some getting used to, and a whole lot of practice, but even short meditation sessions can leave you with a clearer mind, one that’s more capable of focusing on the tasks at hand, and one that is more open to inspiration.

Go for a walk. Connecting with nature is not just a good way to inspire yourself, it’s good for your health! Going for a walk outside is a great way to clear your head, leaving your mind open to new ideas and inspiration. If at all possible taking to nature for that walk would be ideal, but if you can’t make it out of the city, just the fact that you’re outdoors will be of immense benefit. As if that weren’t enough, getting your body moving will help get blood flowing to the brain as well.

Find someone to talk to. We may have to be physically distanced, but that doesn’t mean we can’t talk to each other. Finding someone to talk to, be it to brainstorm and bounce ideas or just to catch up, is a practice that can leave us feeling refreshed and motivated.

How Often Should You Wash Your Mask?

Like it or not, masks may be the must-have fashion accessory for the foreseeable future. While many jurisdictions are making masks mandatory, sometimes both indoors and outdoors, for others it may just be a matter of time. Many of us have started using reusable masks for the sake of the environment and our wallets, but how often does that mask need to be washed? Well, it turns out the answer is daily…

“It is possible to get a mask contaminated after daily wear,” says Prof Raina MacIntyre, an infectious disease researcher at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. “We tested this and found virus on the inside and outside of masks, both surgical and cloth.”

That’s bad news for many who are used to putting on their mask, taking it off, shoving it in a pocket, and so on and so forth for days on end. But unfortunately, frequent mask washing is a necessity, especially if you come in contact with any vulnerable populations.

“You can imagine if someone is infected and they are wearing a cotton fabric mask that is heavily contaminated, it’s possible that those particles could carry the virus,” says Prof William Ristenpart, a chemical engineer at the University of California, Davis. “Of course, you can’t wash it every 20 minutes, but every five or six days is way too long.”
